It's got a loading cap, only difference.

Yes ... The T stands for theater.. So if you remove the cap put in smaller screws holding down the diaphragm and put felt inside the rear cap Viola. 802-8G..

Does the T have a tangerine? Understood had the aluminum plug? There may be both knowing Altec. Pretty sure last pair I fixed had the older plug.

Can the plugs be swapped out? What diaphragm would it have when new?

No. Well, ok it could be done. But, you'd have to scavenge the annular plugs and poles from another set of drivers, do some machining, then have the drivers re-magged once assembled and poles centered. It would be a lot of work for questionable gains.

34647 would be the 8 ohm phragm.

Since this was the "theater" version it would stand to reason that they also made 802-16T's, sorry i don't have the 16 ohm phragm numbers memorized.

I suspect OG is right and the early versions were in the old style body with annular slit phasing. They even went on to make a "T" version of the 902, at least long enough for it to make a catalog appearance.

    Re: 802-8t

There is a lot of discussion on various boards about removal of loading caps to improve sound.
I've not seen any objective evidence that supports these claims (would love to, if someone has!).
Speaking with Bill at GPA a couple of weeks ago, he told me that he in fact has measured drivers before and after removal of loading cap, and said there is no measurable differences (i.e., it's not worth the money to buy the rear covers, screws, felt, etc.)

I have also read somewhere (caveat: it was Altec marketing literature) that said the loading cap helped to smooth out FR...I wish I had bookmarked that so I could remember where that was.

Altec Compression Driver Rear Loading Caps

    The difference is measurable.

At 500hz XO, the difference is also audible to these ears.

EDIT: I should add that if Bill was speaking specifically about the 902's in your 14's(which after some thought i have a suspicion he was), then what he said/says in that context is pretty accurate. Above 14's XO the difference is very negligible, and probably undetectable by all by all but the most supremely sensitive ears.

The difference in response is obvious if you listen. I REALLY surprised at Bill saying that. Even the Symbiotiks can be helped by pulling off the caps. The purpose of the cap is to damp the excursion. As Bowtie says he may be referencing a particular situation. Bear in mind the ferrite drivers are shifted upward from the alnicos, and will respond differently.

    Re: 802-8t

Thanks for that link, Bowtie - I had seen that page a long while ago, but had forgotten about it. I think you may be correct about the 902 assumption - because when I asked Bill about the loading caps, I think I did say it was for the OEM 902s. Another interesting tidbit from that conversation was regarding the mini-mantaray horn on the later model duplexes. I asked if it would be an improvement to retrofit a 604E (for example) with the mini-CD horn and he said "No way - that CD horn drops off hard at 7K"...
