I agree that random drug testing in the schools is a place to start.

I agree drug testing would be a great place to start. You also need admins that will enforce punishment as needed. The testing would be useless if there were no corrective actions taken. I am not saying students should be immediately removed from school, counseling and other corrective measures should be first taken.

It was mentioned in a committee meeting, for things to be addressed to better our schools, recently that one school was given a 2 day notice when the drug dogs were coming for searches. That is not working to make the situation better.

Testing is a tricky issue in that you CAN NOT test the entire student body however you can test anyone involved in extra curricular activity (Sports, Band ect.)

This leads some that may need help that play a sport or in the band to give up there past time since there usage would come out otherwise. While this is not idea since these kids will not get any help and will lose an influence that could possibly be a great alternative, it does serve the purpose of taking there influence away from non users or users that have made the dission to quit in order to continue there activity.

IMHO the biggest benefit to the Drug testing IS that it gives the kids that are on the fence that may be greatly influenced by peer pressure an easy out (I would but I might get tested Monday)

Now after a kid fails a test there HAS to be some type of counseling (it can't all be about sitting out games or being kicked off a team) or the whole thing is pointless

Counts, do you remember what the Dickenson County policy is? I agree with most of what you say. You'll have some not play because of fear of being caught, and you're absolutely right, that it gives kids an easy out, if they choose to use it.

I'm still of the mind one great solution to the drug problem (and this isn't sports related but since this topic is veering in/out of that), is anybody who gets benefits (disability, welfare, etc) is subject to being random tested as well. If a person fails a drug test, they don't lose their benefits then and there, but they are assigned to a case worker, have to undergo counseling etc. If they refuse, they lose whatever rights they had for a minimum of 1 year no matter if they turn around next week and want to be tested. If a person fails a second time, while undergoing counseling, rehab, whatever the case is. They then lose all their benefits for a year minimum or until they successfuly pass 3-4 random tests in a row.

No I do not remember it is something like

A percentage of kids in the programs are tested each week at Random (However if a Coach/Teacher/Parent suspect anything they can request a test)

1st positive 2 weeks off the team + Counceling + Tested every week

2nd positive miss the rest of that season (if it is a different sport/activity then 2 weeks) + Counceling + Tested every week

3rd positive No extra curriculer activity for the rest of the school year + Counceling

I am SURE that what I have posted above is NOT 100% correct but it is something like that.


I think testing people on disability or welfare is a great Idea but I am not so sure what the unexpected reprocussions of that type of program might be

That would actually be the place to start. Then the students. Always start at the top when incorporating a controversial and invasive act / rule.
