Consolodation?

Well, I go to Appalachia, and I have not heard a word about any of this...All I thought this meeting was about was to talk about the survey or whatever. All these people are doing is making the county a joke...and still, I really don't understand anythign about this...consolidation?..How will it be done, and when?..They should plan this crap out before they even start bringing it up.

they have been planning this for a long time...wise county isn't going down the crapper...i can see your all's points with the atheletics, but in the longrun, this will help wise county get better funding for each school...with only 3, i think, schools, they will be top of the line, instead of the crapper schools that these students go to now...they smell, they're falling apart, and instead of trying to renovate and spend boocoos of money, why not consolidate...i think it would be the best thing that happened to wise county...

And which of our "Crapper Schools" are you talking about? Or just all in general- I've seen two systems consolidate and ANYTHING is better. If they can't fund the stuff to keep up the ones we have how will they ADD the space to put the other kids in the rest, and pay for that. Bottom line is some want to borrow a small amount and run them all, some want to buy the center of Wise to build a superschool and give the rest of the county scraps. You run in the green and we will run this. If the school board hadn't wasted so much cash at different times the high schools wouldn't be like this, they might force this on me but they will go out with the schools.

as it is now, the schools are in bad shape. no air, coal dust floating in the air when the heat is on, poor lighting, electrical, poor auditoriums, exteriors look very drab, inadequate labs and computer networks, poor art and drama facilities. whatever it is something needs to be done soon.

These "crapper" schools, as you put it, is where most people around here went to school, and where most people around here are proud to say they went to school. We're proud to say that our kids are going to these schools. This money that would be spent for consolidation could be used to renovate some of the schools that need it. So when you call our schools "crapper" (think of a better term next time), remember you are in the minority.

If you have paid attention to comments in the past, we've done discussed Clintwood several times in the past. It's done been approved over in Dickenson County. Counts in particular has ranted on this several times. How will we feel? Well we'll feel like anybody else who has it happen before, we won't necessarily like it, and some people will hate it no doubt, but guess what, most of us are able to step out of our respective Greenwave or Tiger or Rebels gear and realize that for the sake of our county, and maybe not just the sake, but the survival of the county, its a necessary evil.

I totally appreciate the concept that smaller classes and a lower ratio of students/teachers helps an education. I also totally appreciate the idea of different classes and a broader education, I totally appreciate the idea that it costs more per student per day than it does at larger schools.

You can throw Clintwood up all you want, and yeah I'm sure that our time will come, like I said, our population didn't like the idea (in particular the smallest school Ervinton) but we also realize that you can't afford to keep up the costs associated with shrinking enrollments and increased costs. Will we be forgot? Oh I'm sure its likely we will, but we won't be the first, we won't be the last. Pennington Gap had a pretty good program, but it appears that they are no more. Christopher Gist was pretty good wasn't it, but you know they are no more. I'm sure there are people who wish they were still there but times do change.

i think he's referring to the conditions of the buildings. guys these buildings are way out-dated. what ever happens it needs to be done soon.

i can say that at jj kelly, the computer labs r great. just got new computer they r flat screened in the word processing room, in te typing lab the r 2000 style computer (thos r just used for typing) and accounting/ IT Fundamentals room they r 2004 style regular monitors. overall the computers nice. but everything else u mentioned six4three r true.

I don't think you can not blame the school system partially, they haven't done well with money, no doubt. If you read the comments, they even mention the administration is to big. It's not all roses, its not all consolidation, its a study people and in a study, if its done right, odds are you're gonna have the bad stuff found.

If the same report had came down, and said the exact same things it said, except instead of saying consolidation it had been against it, the worst complainers on here or in the newspapers would be 100% the other way talking about how good it was. Yes there are always going to be issues, yes its not a popular topic, and sure it might could have been delayed (not prevented). There comes a time and a point of diminishing returns in a cost/benefit analysis. The cost to operate, repair and maintain as many different schools as there is now, is no benefit to anybody but the people who do not want to, or are unable to let go of memories and the past.
