Terry Bozzio was inspired by Dom. That says a lot. (I'm not saying anything)

I'm not a fan of his playing either, but I don't think he's out there trying to be the greatest drummer ever. He's a teacher and that's what does really, really well. I've check out his clips on the vic firth site and learnt quite a bit. You don't have to be a great player to be a good teacher. Many professional sport coaches never played the game or really sucked at it, and how about olympic coaches?

The conversation on this topic has not gotten out of hand and is really based on observations if you ask me. Imagine what this place would look like if everyone kept their mouth shut when they had something "not nice" to say...The reason I learn so much here is because do just the opposite of that in a polite manner! Think about it.

I don't think anyone is implying that you should have to bite your tongue, but there's a tactful way to say things, a respectful way. And, I think it's important to find something positive in someone's playing if you're going to point out something negative.

As it's been said, and I know it's somewhat cliche but, these are our fellow drumming brothers. We shouldn't be malicious towards someone who loves to play drums just like we do. If that was a friend asking for constructive criticism we wouldn't just straight up say, "You're terrible and your playing did nothing for me."

We should strive to encourage each other (not just in drumming). Praise is the most obvious way to do this, but, pointing out something negative in a constructive and respectful manner is another way to encourage too.

Also, I agree with Drumming Sort of Person. I can't read FuseU1's posts. I generally just skip over them.

i think the argument over dom famularo's ablilities is a odd one. i think looking at an educator, and wanting them to have the same credentials and abilities as the best profesional musicians in the world is far fetched at best.

a guy like dom is an "educator" for beginner to intermediate/somewhat advanced students and drum enthusists. not a world class session/touring monster. if he was the latter that's what he'd be doing.

some of the best coaches in baseball, basketball, football ect weren't that great at their sport.

    don cherry comes to mind.

but what they they lacked in ability they make up with an ability to inspire and educate people to reach there goals, and improve upon themelves.

i haven't seen a dom clinic in ten tears or so but i don't belive he ever comes out and says "when i'm on tour i do this" or "on my last multiplatinum session i did this"

he gives a basic run down on things and plays some chop crap to wow the beginners. and for the beginners to intermediates it's amazing because everything is digestable, and it's inspiring to get something, and know where to take it to look flashy. that's what beginners want. that's what he does well.

it's hard sometimes to take a step back and remember that we all started somewhere and "neil peart was the best drummer ever". most of us here left that years and years ago. right around the time we heard gadd, vinnie, and weckl.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I also used to skip over them when I first got here.

Now, I actually find them quite entertaining and somewhat challenging at times. If nothing else, it's unique AFAICT. (as far as I can tell)

Dom is definitely very enthusiastic about what he does, and don't get me wrong, I think thats great. But after hearing other players play things that inspire me, and then i go back and watch Dom's over-exaggerated solos, he seems kind of ridiculous to me. I have learned some things from his videos on vic firth however. And I would not even compare myself to his ability, because I have only been playing for two years, and I have a long road ahead of me that I greatly look forward to. I have very little experience when put into perspective, and for that reason I listen to playing that encourages me to continue. Dom's playing just doesn't do it for me, but everybody's got their own opinions.
