VC abilities, to be a jazzdrummer like Elvin Jones or jack deJohnette,
are not developed enough until today, or so ?
what was the question ?
jazz is imagination or what ?
can VC play jazz ?
yes.
can he play like elvin and jack ?
no.
why ? not because of his technical abilities, I think.

Vinnie plays jazz like he is !!!
We all respect, I think that he doen't care about Elvin or Jack when he plays jazz !!!
He of course knows their drumming, but he has his own approach that we all love so much !!!
The masters plays their own style, and Vinnie is a master of masters so...

but after reading VC, I noticed something else.
that's the reason, why I asked, if jazz is IMAGINATION.

to say, VC plays everything, if he wants too, is not very nice for other drummers.
I'am a BIG fan of Jack de Johnette, if it comes to so called jazzmusic.
to me, it sounds strange, if you rodge, try to tell me,
that de johnettes playing is just something, VC could just copy, if he wants too.
that's not, what I read out of VC 'PERSONAL statement.
the thing is NOT signature licks.
and the next thing is perhaps, what kind of music you have to play.
I like some records, VC is playing on very much, because of his DRUMMING.
not too much because of the music.
If I want to listen to music, I prefer to listen to keith jarret or,
to give you one exact example, I listen to michael brecker.
the record has no name and was made in 1986.
to me, there is something going on MUSICALLY.
I have to tell my opinion in black and white style, to make it clear,
what I think, VC wants to tell with his statement.
there are music styles, where is starts to be very necessary,
to follow your imagination.
perhaps that's JAZZ ?

VC "HIMSELF" stated the following sentences.
I think, there are no doubts, what the master HIMSELF tried to say us.
the keyword is IMAGINATION.

If you say, VC is the master of the other masters, and he can play THEIR styles,
if he just wants to, I understand it like, the others are easy to copy.
but I don't agree with you in that point.
I think, it's ridicolous, to think, VC can just play like de Johnette,
because the playing has also something to do with imaginatiion and life experience.
that's what VC tried to say me, I think.

All who say this thread is never ending...well it is because the topic has not been settled and that's called communication. It has taken on other life forms without blazing flames attacking one another.

This is a rare dialogue here, very rare indeed because we are forced to listen to each other with no bias that almost always takes place when in a room together. No way all these voices could be heard in a room together for this length of time.
If you don't recognize this as a good thing than you have accepted a slant on what might be truth as that which only you will accept.
It's called patient conversation gentlemen and it is RARE! If all groups of people could enter into exhaustive conversation and stretch themselves, this planet would be a heck of a lot better...no doubt about it!
I only wish this type of conversation took place where I worked...or had leadership that encouraged it...the productivity would increase 100 fold.

The court of the jazz snobs has recently settled the case of Vinnie vs Jazz Snobs. Due to extensive forensic evidence, it has been found that Vinnie cannot play jazz. He cannot play like Dejohnette.
"I do not want to play like a group of kids throwing sticks at a drumset" exclaimed Vinnie.
This outburst put Vinnie in contempt and ended his testimony. Following testimony, Jack Dejohnette filed a musical restraining order against Vinnie, banning him from playing anything remotely like jazz. Also, banning him from using ambient microphones, and forcing him to completely mike his set thru a large PA with gates and compressors whenever he plays live.

I used to dabble in the Tae Kwon Do/Hap Ki Do/Moo Duk Kwan lessons thang [MANY moon ago, grasshoppa', when much younga', fasta', & betta' lookeeng - which ain't sayin' much ;c)], but I pale [re: s*ck] in comparison to some of the great MA-ists AWA pro kick-boxers of our time, not to mention some of the younger competitors out there nowadays; much as I do overall compared to VC on kit... ;cp
