As I see it, being here is like
being a guest at someone's home.

Steve has set up a forum that has
allowed so many drummers to learn
about drums and music, not to ment-
ion Vinnie and other great players.

What's more, a real community has
emerged and in it, the acknowledg-
ment of each other, with a found-
ation of respect.

I feel very fortunate to be here.

What forums have players like Gary
and Pete and Alex and others? Where
can we find such a base for learn-
ing - drummers, young and old, shar-
ing personal experiences, making
recommendations on others behalf?

I have made real friends here and
I want them treated with respect.
I value them and that's what this
is all about.

Sorry about "flaming" in past posts. I just didn't like the fact that SDK said Vince was an insult to Jazz because he didn't play what he thought to be "his brand" of Bop.

I have alot to be thankfull for from the guys on this board, because they've brought me alot closer to "drumming" & it's concepts than I have ever been in my life. Thanks to all of you Especially Steven, Jon, Derek, Randy, et all.

Man I've never read a thread that was as much a waste of time as this was.

As for this Jazz Snobbism, I'm currently getting a bachelor's in Jazz Performance, and I run into to this snobbism all the time.

I get it from the students though. I never get it from any of the faculty because they have matured enoguh to know that in the end it's all just music.
For example people were shitting lead bricks when Beethoven was writting his most respected works. Nowadays, it's jsust classical like Mozart's stuff, yet it was completely off in a different direction.
I just don't understand why the haters have to be out in full bloom.

Anyways, for all you that think Vinnie isn't jazz or jazz ehnough, I was talking to the drumset instructor from Eastman School of Music in a lesson I had with him during his visit to my school this semester. I told him that I was listening to too much Vinnie, thinking that he was on this snob level, but to my suprise he was like: "but he's so musical" and "He has developed a great time feel in the last decade"
He then agreed that Vinnie isn't a jazz drummer, because that's not all he does, but he mentioned that he's a great jazz player.
So it seems that even the most educated and experienced players know what's up.

Plus, I'm sure Vinnie would swing harder and play with more genius and authenticity then any of the cats talking crap in this thread, so what the hell do they know.

I'm sorry my drumming brothers, but I believe you're all reading what you want to read, and not what's actually on the page.
Gary, I would love to check out your jazz projects, I'm looking for the online as we speak. And, I'm not familiar with your jazz playing, so I'm sorry if I implied you didn't play jazz. But what I have heard of work, is some of greatest drumming of our generation.

Several of you are going on and on about snobbery. Or saying that I want to hear rimshots and identical jazz fills like those of Max Roach. Tell me genuises...have you EVER heard Jack DeJohnette cop a fill directly from those guys? NO. Never. But my friends, he speaks the language of jazz. People's comments in here prove that they don't know what that is. And the only way for you to know, is by transcribing soloists and the interaction behind them. I can't explain it to you in thread.
But I never said the music doesn't grow. Tain, Ari Hoenig, Joey Baron, Hass, Jeff Ballard..they all play very modern rhythms, very similar on paper on those of VCs. You're only looking at the surface, i.e always metioning licks and fills. Musical language isn't about licks and fills. It's a language of harmony, melody and rhythm. And this is the last time I'm saying this, because I feel as if no one is listening, or even trying to learn....YOU CAN TAKE IT ANYWHERE, once you know it. What makes drummers different is who knows it. Vinnie is a genius, but he does not play rooted in jazz. And for me and most jazz musicians, it's not jazz. Jeff Watts takes it just as far out as anyone. He doesn't copy anyone, but he speaks the language. It's a language folks. Denying that is only denying your own progression in music. It's a musical fact. If you're not into jazz, then maybe you're not able to hear the difference. That's OK. It sounds like you think the language is something that locks you in. That's silly. Jazz is a musical language that keeps growing, but those who are modern pioneers are taking it from where others left off. They're not coming in out of blue and just playing amazing licks. They speak the language. The language is not riffs, licks, fills, sidestick rimshot, or simply learning a max roach solo. It's a language of musical communication that developed through the blues and then be-bop and beyond. It deals with knowing when to react and how to react, and it deals with a feel. And that's just skimming the surface. So please don't say I'm into progression. Does anyone know who Jim Black is? Gerry Hemingway? Aldo Romano? these guys are so free it's ridiculous, but the still play the language.
Now unless you know what that is, don't answer this. HAHA! It's too frustrating to read. Where's a jazz guy when you need him. Help Gary!!!!!

Well even with a "little tension" floating around here, I still have appreciated the dialog!

That issue of not tipping your hat to the fathers of bop in you're playing had me thinking about the players on the other end of the continuum. Not the greats, but the new crew just starting out. How many high school jazz bands have you heard where it is so obvious that these kids haven't listened to any of it...and are more or less just imitating the the kids from the year before. These are the folks that really need to go through the required listening list and soak up some of the roots of jazz.

Deep Fried, no offense, but you don't know who I am, or how I sound. So you speak for yourself and the others when you talk about people's playing. For all you know, I can be Victor Lewis. Do you know who that is?
